about

A poem by Aragon, set to music by Léo Ferré in which he tells the story of his youth when a bunch of pals used to go to the gypsy camps by the dykes where they got drunk, got their palms read, danced all night and ended up in the arms of a wild beauty, waking up in the morning with hay in their hair and fantasy in their hearts as they drove back to town.

lyrics

(ENGLISH BELOW)

A chaque fois tout recommence toute musique me séduit

ENGLISH (Basic translation - Jean Brassard)

There exist near the water dams
A sort of gypsy camp
Where the youth of our days
Plays at disentangling the yours from the mine.

A bunch of us get there by car

Usually in the month of August
They’ll tell you your fortune
For some peppers and some sweet wine.

We spend the bright night drinking
Dancing, clapping hands

And with no time to think of it
Tomorrow’s there in full daylight.

We come back all at once
Happy, penniless, vaguely drunk
Our carts filled with flowers
Our fate written in our palm.

I took the hand of a blooming youth
Who followed me into my house
Her eyes had a dark aqua glance
And showed the madness of the sea.
She had a very light gait
And the long legs of a doe
Ever since I was a little boy.
I’ve always loved widl women

This one quickly talked
Of the smell of magnolias;

Her dress immediately fell
When my haste untied her lace.

In those days I was naïve
One word was a promise to me.
And I mistook poppies
For the flowers of passion.

Each time it all starts again,
Any music charms me
And the most banal of romance
Is to me eternal poetry

We played with our soul

A long day, a short night
Then in the morning
Bonsoir madame
Love says its farewell
