about

Sanguine, blood orange, the metaphor for a man's lover, her dress falling on the waxed parquet, the zipper of that dress crackling under the lovers' feet like grape seeds as they begin to make love. Jacques Prevert, one of the most inspiring poets and screenwrites (Children of Paradise) had his gorgeous tale set to music by Henri Crolla, Montand's guitarist.

lyrics

(ENGLISH BELOW)

La fermeture éclair
A glissé sur tes reins
Et tout l'orage heureux
De ton corps amoureux
Au beau milieu de l'ombre
A éclaté soudain

Et ta robe en tombant
Sur le parquet ciré
N'a pas fait plus de bruit
Qu'une écorce d'orange
Tombant sur un tapis

Mais sous nos pieds
Ces petits boutons de nacre
Craquaient comme des pépins
Ô Sanguine joli fruit !

La pointe de ton sein
A tracé tendrement
La ligne de ma chance
Dans le creux de ma main.
Sanguine, joli fruit
Soleil de nuit.

ENGLISH (translated by Jean Brassard & David Krueger)

The zipper of your dress
glides down the curve of your back and the happy storm
of your body in love
against the night’s shadows suddenly bursts.

And your dress falling
on the waxed parquet
makes no more noise
than the peel of an orange dropped to the floor.

But under our feet,
the small shiny pearls of that zipper
crackle like grapes.
Oh, Sanguine! Pretty fruit!

the point of your breast
tenderly outlines
my fate cupped in my hand.
Oh, Sanguine, pretty fruit,
sun of night.
